Australian newspaper launches PDF 'smart edition'
The Sydney Morning Herald has launched a 'smart edition', a PDF version of the Australian newspaper.
This additional platform could provide a valuable target market for people in
marketing jobs as it may widen the paper's readership.
Last week the newspaper announced the launch, calling it "an innovation in publishing that will bring a new dimension to newspaper consumption for both readers and advertisers".
However, the newspaper's boss Lloyd Whish-Wilson told Mumbrella that the edition is not an iPad app, but more of an "add-on".
An app will come in September, he added, which will be "unlike anything yet produced by a newspaper publisher in Australia".
Mr Whish-Wilson explained that the smart edition "was developed as a value add for those of our subscribers and readers who like the newspaper format and who also want the convenience of reading their newspaper in alternative, electronic formats".
"It means our subscribers can take their subscription with them to their desktop, lap-top, or iPad."
The newspaper attracts 80,000 subscribers during the week and more than 120,000 at weekends.
